Dental Fillings

What are the available dental filling options?
At West Perth Cosmetic Dental, we offer two main types of filling materials to choose from – composite (white) fillings and porcelain (ceramic) fillings. The type of material your dentist will recommend depends on the size and position of the cavity as well as what your personal preference is. Our friendly and experienced dentists can assist in providing the information you need to make an informed decision.Composite (white) Fillings
Composite fillings are made of a mixture of resin and other fillers and can be colour-matched to the shade of your natural teeth. They are strong enough for small and medium cavities, usually those located on visible front teeth. Composite fillings have a relatively short life span compared to other filling materials, so they may need to be replaced after a few years.
Porcelain (Ceramic) Fillings
Porcelain fillings, also known as ceramic fillings, are composed of a mixture of glass and ceramic particles. This type of dental filling can also be tailored to the shade that best matches your natural teeth colour. Its remarkable strength makes it a great choice for large molar (back tooth) restorations. CEREC technology allows us to quickly produce porcelain restorations in just a single appointment, eliminating the need for messy impressions and temporary fillings. With 3D scanning and milling machines we can make these in our office while you wait, so you won’t have to return for another visit.
Gold Fillings
Gold fillings are a type of dental restoration made up of high-grade gold alloys. Gold is highly durable and can provide strong protection to large cavities, particularly those located in the molars (back teeth). However, the main drawback is cost – gold is a costly material, making this type of filling a more expensive option and the least popular choice for most patients.

What about Amalgam Fillings?
When it comes to fillings, silver amalgam fillings are one of the oldest materials used in dentistry. Amalgam contains a mixture of metals, including silver, copper, tin, zinc and small amounts of mercury.
Although there has been a dispute surrounding the use of amalgam fillings due to the presence of mercury, studies show that it is a safe material when used correctly. Amalgam has also been known to be durable and cost-effective, but most of our patients prefer to have their fillings made from composite or porcelain due to their nicer aesthetic qualities.

Through advancements in technology, modern dental fillings are now significantly tougher and more resilient than they ever were before. Replacing amalgam with more aesthetic, biocompatible materials has become the standard in dentistry today.
